The Big Loop, Days, 63/64: Waterfalls (21 images)

Michigan's Upper Peninsula offers abundant beautiful scenery, including hundreds of terrific waterfalls. Among them, Tahquamenon Falls is striking because of its unusual coppery color. The coloring comes from not mud but from tannins leached from cedar swamps along its route. It has led some people to refer to it as "Root Beer Falls".

Another, smaller, but still beautiful waterfall is Sable Falls. Getting to it is a short hike down about 165 wooden stairs.

Later in the evening, I was treated to a gorgeous sunset. A nice finish to a great day!
