The Big Loop, Day 63: Shipwrecks! (18 images)

After saying goodbye to family members in the Buffalo area, I drove through Canada, into Michigan, then up to the Upper Penninsula. The first stop of note was the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point Light-Station. It was off the main route west, but well worth the visit.

The museum is located on a rocky point in Lake Superior, largest by far of the Great Lakes. That lake is the watery grave of at least 350 shipwrecks and over 10,000 sailors. The museum is only about 17.5 miles away from where the SS Edmund Fitzgerald went down in 1975, killing all 29 aboard. Coincidentally, my visit was only two days after the passing of Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot, who is well known for his song about the wreck of that at ship.

A tasty lunch of a whitefish sandwich along the road.

The ship's bell was eventually recovered by divers in 1995.
