The Big Loop, Day 3: Petrified Forest (11 images)

Petrified Forest National Park, in Arizona, is a part of the much larger Painted Desert. It is a stark, other-worldly landscape. It of course include fossilized trees that lived hundreds of millions of years ago. In much more recent times, the area was home to indigenous tribes, who left messages in stone, many of which still survive. Here are a few random images from my tour.
