The Big Loop, Day 44: Chincoteague Wild Ponies (2 images)
My fascination with the Chesapeake Bay got a boost when my brother and I took a boat ride out into the bay to see the Chincoteague Wild Ponies. The wild herd of about 150, and a similar one on Assateague Island, have been there for hundreds of years. Many speculate that they are the result of a wrecked Spanish Galleon.
Whatever their source, it's a wonder to view these smallish, shaggy, sturdy horses who adapted to their particular environment over the years. And to do it while boating in the Chesapeake and enjoying the cool, clear ocean air made it even better. A far cry from Utah's deserts! There was other nature there of course that also caught my eye. Enjoy.
