I have visited the Washington, D.C. area numerous times and have been fortunate to take in a lot of the famous sites there. But I have always wanted to visit Ford's Theater, where Lincoln was assasinated. And since I had visited his birthplace just several days before, it was even more fitting that I see it this time.

So my two brothers and I went to see it. We were able to visit the extensive museum below it that especially explained things leading up to the assassination, including lots of info about the conspirators. And about politics. And the Civil War. This post is a sampling from the museum(s).
We aren't able to visit the actual theater as a play was in progress. But we were allowed to walk across the street and visit he Peterson House, where Lincoln was taken afterwards for medical care, and where he died the next morning. Exhibits there did a remarkable job of detailing what happened on that night, the subsequent manhunt and trial, and the funeral train procession.
The overwhelming question left in my mind was "How much faster and smoother would Reconstruction have gone if Lincoln have lived to lead it?" We'll never know of course.
