Mountain Goats (22 images)

This post is about goats. ALL about goats. Mountain goats, to be more specific.

During yesterday's hike on the Hidden Lake Trail at Logan Pass, a friend and I first encountered an adult mountain goat lying on a snow field very near the trail. I love that white-on-white. We watched it for a while and would have been satisfied if it had been our only sighting. But a startling experience awaited...

Once we got to the overlook, there was a family (herd?) of six goats, adults and kids, hanging out, grazing, and licking salt from the wooden handrails. They stayed aware of, but untroubled by the 10-20 onlookers, often strolling right past them. The adults were still shedding their winter coats by rubbing against trees, rocks, dirt, fence posts, anything nearby. It was such a treat to watch them "do their thing".
