Antelope Island Bison - Health Screening

Once all of the bison have been rounded up, and once they've had a few days to calm down, it's time for them to "visit the doctor". Various health and wellness checks are performed by the vet and a sizable staff of workers.

Moving the bison from the herd into the chutes is still quite a production. The bison are then released into different groups: 1) healthy and will be released, 2) calves to be auctioned, 3) young bulls to be auctioned, and 4) new mamas with their babies. It's the rubber gloves treatment - They also perform a "rectal palpation" to see if they can feel the unborn calf or feel a pulse. TMI? Probably. But that's how it is done, cowboy.

The secret to attending an event like this is to talk with anybody and everybody. The workers are VERY friendly, stories are amazing, and the details are fascinating. Then, hopefully, you get some good photos (given your limited access).
