Horse Pulls

The original "horse power" was on full display last evening in Draper, sponsored by the Utah Horse Pullers Association. There is very little money to be had in the entertaining sport - horse owners compete mostly for camaraderie and bragging rights. The only real training the horses (primarily "Belgian Drafts") get are working in the field.

Simplified rules: The two-horse teams pull a "boat" (sled) loaded with weights. No whipping or abuse of the horses is allowed. With each successful round, another 1000 lbs. are added as a further test of strength. Qualified pulls are 27.5 feet between ropes spaced 14 feet apart. There are two competitive classes: light (3500 lbs. and under) and heavy (over 3501 lbs.). Winning weights pulled can top 10,000 pounds!

Beautiful animals, fun family entertainment! Check out https://utahhorsepullers.weebly.com/ for a competition schedule.
