Chaco Culture National Historic Park

This remote site has always fascinated me. As archaeologists have learned more and more over the years, my interest has just increased. It is a singularly spectacular location in remote, northwest New Mexico, accessible only via 16 miles of washboard roads. Perhaps the most massive of Puebloan structures, Chaco was central to a thriving culture composed of thousands of very sophisticated people between 850 and 1250 A.D.

While a small group of Puebloan lived there, it was likely a gathering place for exchange of goods and to perform ritual ceremonies. It likely drew people and clans from many hundred of miles in all direction.

The architecture was impressive indeed. At its largest, Pueblo Bonito covered 3 acres and featured more than 600 rooms, many likely used for storage. the Puebloan also had a sophisticated understanding of astronomy, which guided their planting and harvesting cycles.

There is PLENTY more information about Chaco on-line. Take a look. Better yet, find time to visit this magical place!
