Alaska 3 of 7: Turnagain Arm
South of Anchorage is the Turnagain Arm, home to lots of marine life and its famous "bore tide". When conditions are just right, that tide can reach 6 to 10 feet, travel at over 20 mph, and provide surfers a ride of 5 miles! While we didn't witness a bore tide, we clearly observed how rapidly the tide flows in and out.
While driving from Denali to Whittier, we stopped for a night at the small ski town of Girdwood. It's one of the very few places on earth where a person could ski and surf on the same day at locations within only a few miles of each other!
By the way, another thing that makes Alaska so great are its people. Literally everybody we met in our travels was genuinely friendly, open and welcoming.
