Alaska 6 of 7: Eagles, Eagles Eagles!

Between Soldatna and Homer, along the Sterling Highway, is a reminder of Alaska's Russian past. In the tiny community of Ninilchik sits the historic Holy Transfiguration of our Lord Russian Orthodox Church. We enjoyed wandering the grounds and reading some headstones.

But what really grabbed our full attention was on the beach at Anchor River State Recreation Area, near the town of Anchor Point. A group of 8 or 10 eagles were flying along the shoreline and fishing... or at least looking for scraps.

It may at first look like a combination of Golden and Bald Eagles. Rather, the group included mature and juvenile Bald Eagles (who don't get their signature white head until about the fourth year). They didn't seem to mind our presence as they feasted, fended off crows, and looked for more food. I think we watched them for over an hour.

NOT an eagle!
