AMERICAN PELICANS!

What do "brief", "pod", "pouch", "scoop" and "squadron" have in common? They are all collective nouns for groups of pelicans!

Yesterday morning, I spent several hours out at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge. It was a gorgeous day and I came back with A LOT of photos - roughly 25 species in all. There are just way too many for one post. So I will break the images down by species and get them posted in the next few days.

Man, oh man, when an American Pelican takes flight, it is a beautiful thing!

Yes, pelicans do work together to herd fish. They form a kind of U-shaped formation and drive fish toward shallow water, sometimes flapping their wings against the water to aid the herding.
